The UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has launched a new microgrid project aimed at transforming how energy is managed across federal government buildings. The initiative represents a major step toward building a more resilient, decentralised, and sustainable energy system, aligned with the country’s long-term infrastructure and climate goals. The microgrid model integrates renewable energy generation, energy storage, and advanced digital management systems to ensure efficient and reliable electricity supply. Initially piloted at the Ministry’s headquarters in Sharjah, the project demonstrated strong results, including reduced energy consumption, lower costs, and a measurable decline in carbon emissions. A key objective of the initiative is to enhance energy security by enabling buildings to operate independently during power outages or emergencies. By shifting from a centralised grid model to decentralised systems, the project ensures continuity of critical services while improving overall energy efficiency and sustainability performance. The government plans to scale the microgrid model across the UAE, supported by the development of national technical and regulatory frameworks. This expansion is expected to accelerate the country’s transition toward smart, low-carbon infrastructure and reinforce its ambition to become a global leader in sustainable and future-ready energy systems.
