Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) has successfully raised US$750 million through a five-year Blue Bond to finance sustainable water and wastewater infrastructure projects, reinforcing its commitment to climate resilience and long-term water security. The issuance marks several milestones, including the first Blue Bond by a government-related entity (GRE) in the GCC, the largest Blue Bond issued by an integrated power and water utility globally, and the largest Blue Bond ever issued in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Issued through a private placement arranged by Standard Chartered Bank, the bond attracted strong interest from international investors. It carries a 5.125% coupon, is listed on the London Stock Exchange's International Securities Market, and has received Aa3 and AA credit ratings from Moody's and Fitch, respectively, reflecting TAQA's strong financial standing. The Blue Bond was issued under TAQA's updated Green and Blue Finance Framework, which now supports investments in sustainable water infrastructure, green grid projects and climate adaptation initiatives. The proceeds will be used to finance or refinance eligible projects across the water value chain, including desalination, water transmission and distribution, wastewater treatment and water reuse. With this latest transaction, TAQA has raised US$2.6 billion through Green and Blue-labelled bonds since launching its Green Finance Framework in 2023. The company has also invested nearly US$10 billion in energy transition projects by the end of 2025 under its 2030 Vision for Sustainable and Profitable Growth. TAQA stated that the bond issuance aligns with Abu Dhabi's Integrated Water Sector Strategy and Climate Change Adaptation Plan, supporting the emirate's efforts to strengthen water resilience in one of the world's most water-stressed regions. The funding will help expand sustainable water infrastructure while addressing growing demand through reliable, efficient and environmentally responsible solutions.
