Singapore Invests in Food Waste Upcycling to Advance Circular Economy

Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) has awarded S$5.3 million (US$4.1 million) to three innovative projects that transform food industry by-products into high-value products, supporting the country's circular economy and food security objectives. The funding, provided under the Closing the Resource Loop initiative, aims to promote resource efficiency by converting food waste into commercially viable ingredients, materials and agricultural products.

The selected projects focus on upcycling a range of food waste streams, including brewers' spent grain, spent coffee grounds and vegetable by-products. These materials will be converted into applications such as plant-based proteins, temperature-control materials for cold chain logistics, food flavourings, animal feed and crop fertilisers. The initiative also supports the development of technologies that improve food waste segregation and enable greater recovery of valuable resources.

The investment aligns with Singapore's broader sustainability ambitions under the Green Plan 2030, which seeks to reduce landfill waste, improve recycling rates and strengthen domestic food resilience.

By encouraging innovation in food waste valorisation, the programme aims to accelerate the adoption of circular economy solutions while creating new opportunities for sustainable manufacturing and resource recovery.
