Sharjah Airport Achieves Level 4 Carbon Accreditation Milestone

Sharjah Airport has achieved Level 4 accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme administered by Airports Council International (ACI), marking a significant milestone in its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and advance sustainability across airport operations.

The accreditation recognises airports that demonstrate absolute carbon emissions reductions and align their carbon management strategies with international climate objectives. Level 4 also requires airports to work closely with stakeholders across the airport ecosystem to support broader emissions reduction efforts.

According to Sharjah Airport Authority, the achievement reflects ongoing initiatives to improve energy efficiency, reduce operational emissions and strengthen environmental performance. The accreditation also supports the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative and the country's broader climate goals.

Airport officials said the milestone highlights Sharjah Airport's commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations while continuing efforts to reduce its environmental footprint through long-term carbon management and climate action measures.

Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 4 requires demonstrable absolute emissions reductions rather than relative improvements - a meaningfully higher bar than Levels 1-3, which focus on measurement, reduction and neutralisation of an airport's own operations. Level 4 also requires stakeholder engagement across the airport ecosystem (airlines, ground handlers, service providers), which is often the harder sustainability challenge because it depends on parties the airport does not directly control.

Aviation's overall decarbonisation challenge remains significant given the current pace of SAF deployment and aircraft-fleet turnover.

Airport-level emissions reductions - improved energy efficiency, on-site renewable generation, ground-vehicle electrification, and terminal-management optimisation - are complementary to but not substitute for aviation-fuel-driven emissions reduction.

Level 4 airports demonstrate serious sustainability positioning that can attract preferred partnerships with net-zero-committed airlines.
