Riyadh Region Launches 181 Major Environment, Water & Agriculture Projects Worth Over SAR 38 billion

The Riyadh region has launched a comprehensive development programme comprising 181 projects across the environment, water, and agriculture sectors, with a total investment exceeding SAR 38 billion (US$ 10 billion). The initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader commitment to sustainability, resource security, and economic diversification under Vision 2030. The programme includes the inauguration of 82 projects, valued at more than SAR 9.8 billion, and the groundbreaking of 99 additional projects worth approximately SAR 28.3 billion. These projects are designed to enhance water security, promote environmental restoration, and strengthen agricultural productivity throughout the Riyadh region. Key initiatives focus on expanding drinking water distribution systems, improving wastewater infrastructure, and boosting desalinated water production capacity to ensure long-term resilience. Environmental components include large-scale afforestation efforts, the development of national parks, and restoration of natural reserves aimed at improving biodiversity and ecosystem balance. The projects also support sustainable agriculture practices and efficient resource use, in line with Saudi Arabia’s environmental sustainability goals. A major highlight of the initiative is the proposed North Riyadh Geopark Project, spanning nearly 3,000 square kilometres. The project seeks to document the region’s rich geological history and natural heritage, with aspirations for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This initiative aims to position Riyadh as a regional leader in sustainable tourism and environmental education, linking conservation with economic opportunity. Collectively, these efforts align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives to diversify the national economy, enhance quality of life, and promote sustainable growth across critical sectors. By prioritizing resource efficiency and long-term resilience, the Riyadh region’s investments in environment, water, and agriculture mark a significant step toward achieving national sustainability ambitions.
