Qatar Launches National Strategy to Combat Desertification and Restore Ecosystems

Qatar Launches National Strategy to Combat Desertification and Restore Ecosystems

17 June 2026

Qatar has launched a national strategy aimed at combating desertification, restoring degraded ecosystems and enhancing environmental resilience across the country. The initiative forms part of the government's broader efforts to address land degradation and support sustainable natural resource management.

The strategy focuses on protecting biodiversity, improving vegetation cover and rehabilitating ecosystems affected by climate change and human activities. Authorities plan to implement a range of measures to strengthen land conservation and promote the sustainable use of natural resources.

The initiative also aligns with Qatar's commitments under international environmental agreements, including efforts to address desertification and biodiversity loss. By restoring degraded land and improving ecosystem health, the government aims to enhance the country's ability to withstand environmental and climate-related challenges.

Officials have highlighted that healthy ecosystems play a critical role in supporting biodiversity, improving soil quality and strengthening long-term environmental sustainability. The strategy is expected to contribute to national climate adaptation goals while helping preserve natural habitats for future generations.

Land degradation and desertification are among the more challenging environmental issues for arid economies. Qatar's national strategy responds to obligations under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) while addressing domestic ecosystem-service losses that affect water availability, soil productivity and biodiversity. Ecosystem restoration in extreme-climate contexts requires sustained multi-decade programmes rather than one-off interventions.

The parallel biodiversity and vegetation-cover emphasis reflects a systems-based understanding: land-restoration effectiveness depends on protecting biological diversity that supports soil, water and pollinator functions. Isolated tree-planting without ecosystem-thinking often fails within a few years in arid conditions.

For agricultural, real-estate, infrastructure and industrial clients with land-use exposure in Qatar and the wider Gulf, Cognitud's nature-based solutions, impact assessment and sustainability due diligence teams help clients evaluate land-related risks and opportunities, structure ecosystem-restoration partnerships, and prepare disclosures aligned with TNFD, SBTN and jurisdictional biodiversity frameworks that increasingly determine access to sustainable-finance and reputational positioning on nature.
