Oman Unveils Updated Climate Plan Targeting Up to 33% Emissions Reduction by 2035

Oman has released its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), setting a new target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 33% by 2035 as part of its commitment to the Paris Agreement. Submitted by the Environment Authority, the revised climate plan outlines the country's strengthened approach to emissions reduction while supporting sustainable economic growth and climate resilience.

The updated NDC includes an unconditional commitment to reduce emissions by 7% through domestic actions and policies. It also identifies the potential to achieve an additional 26% reduction, contingent on international support in the form of climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building, bringing the total potential reduction to 33% by 2035.

The report highlights priority actions across key sectors, including energy, transport, industry, waste management, agriculture, and land use. Oman also plans to expand renewable energy deployment, improve energy efficiency, encourage low-carbon technologies, and strengthen natural carbon sinks to help meet its climate objectives.

In addition to mitigation measures, the updated NDC places greater emphasis on climate adaptation by enhancing resilience to climate-related risks such as water scarcity, extreme weather events, and ecosystem degradation. The plan aims to safeguard communities, critical infrastructure, and natural resources while supporting sustainable development.

The revised climate commitments align with Oman Vision 2040 and the country's long-term ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. By strengthening its climate targets and outlining a comprehensive roadmap for implementation, Oman is reinforcing its commitment to advancing sustainable development and contributing to global efforts to address climate change.
