Oman Launches Camelina Pilot to Advance Sustainable Biofuel Production

Oman's Nama Water Services has launched a pilot project to cultivate Camelina, an oilseed crop recognized as a sustainable feedstock for biofuel production, marking a significant step toward advancing the country's clean energy and circular economy ambitions.

The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with Hema Energy and aims to assess the feasibility of growing Camelina using treated wastewater, creating a productive use for reclaimed water resources while supporting renewable fuel development.

The pilot project focuses on evaluating Camelina's adaptability to Oman's climate and its potential to produce high-quality biofuel feedstock without competing with food crops for agricultural land or freshwater resources. By utilizing treated wastewater for irrigation, the initiative promotes efficient water management and demonstrates how recycled water can contribute to sustainable agricultural practices in arid regions.

The project also seeks to strengthen Oman's biofuel value chain by exploring low-carbon alternatives to conventional fossil fuels. Camelina oil can be processed into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel, and other biofuels, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions from hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation and heavy transport. The initiative aligns with Oman's broader efforts to diversify its energy mix while supporting global decarbonization goals.

Supported by partners including Sultan Qaboos University, the Environment Authority, and the Oman Net Zero Centre, the pilot combines scientific research with practical implementation to evaluate the crop's long-term commercial potential. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights into sustainable biofuel production, efficient wastewater reuse, and climate-resilient agriculture.

By integrating water recycling, renewable energy innovation, and sustainable agriculture, the Camelina pilot highlights Oman's commitment to developing environmentally responsible solutions that enhance resource efficiency, strengthen energy security, and support the country's transition toward a low-carbon economy.
