Malaysia to Host Southeast Asia’s Premier Sustainability Summit in 2025

Malaysia will host the Kuala Lumpur Sustainability Summit 2025 (KLSS) from 14 to 16 October 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The event, organised by the national ministries responsible for natural-resources, environment and economy, aims to bring together more than 400 participants from government, business, academia and civil society.

Under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, the summit positions Malaysia as a regional driver of climate-resilience and sustainable economic transformation. It will feature keynote addresses, dialogue sessions, and culminate in a declaration on climate resilience, designed to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals across.

As the 2025 Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia is using the summit to amplify regional collaboration, emphasise equitable climate action and accelerate the shift from ambition to measurable outcomes.

Malaysia's role as 2025 ASEAN Chair gives KLSS unusual convening weight. ASEAN is at a critical juncture on sustainability: multiple member states are developing national carbon-pricing systems, ISSB-aligned disclosure requirements, and taxonomies for sustainable finance, but regional harmonisation lags behind the pace of individual initiatives. Summits like these are where the political space to align frameworks is created - or lost.

The "Inclusivity and Sustainability" theme signals attention to distributional issues that are increasingly central to climate policy in emerging economies: how transition costs are shared, how smallholder farmers and informal-sector workers participate in green economies, and how climate resilience investments reach the communities most exposed to physical risk.
