Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to human rights and sustainable development by supporting two key declarations proposed by the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR). During the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Interface Meeting with AICHR, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan endorsed the ASEAN Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy and Sustainable Environment, along with the Declaration on Promoting the Right to Development and Peace. He described both documents as timely responses to the region’s urgent challenges, particularly those affecting vulnerable communities. The declarations reflected AICHR’s continued efforts to integrate human rights with broader concerns such as environmental protection, social inclusion, and sustainable development. Mohamad emphasized that these initiatives not only addressed current risks like environmental degradation and inequality but also demonstrated ASEAN’s proactive stance in preparing for future challenges. He further welcomed AICHR’s upcoming 2025 Annual Report, which is expected to outline progress and guide future actions. As AICHR marked its 15th anniversary, Malaysia urged the body to strengthen its relevance and impact while preserving ASEAN’s centrality and unity. Mohamad highlighted that ASEAN’s human rights agenda should remain region-led and rooted in its foundational charters, ensuring that community building efforts remain inclusive and locally grounded. The meeting took place as part of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and related events under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025. Held in Kuala Lumpur under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, the events brought together over 1,500 delegates from ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste, and regional partners to align on shared priorities, including the ASEAN 2045 vision for a unified and human rights-driven regional future.
