Kuwait Awards $1.6 Billion Contract to Upgrade Sabiya Power Station

Kuwait has awarded a $1.6 billion contract to modernise the Sabiya Power and Water Distillation Station, marking a significant step in upgrading the country’s critical energy infrastructure. The project, led by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, extending asset lifespan and ensuring a more reliable supply of electricity and water across the country. The modernisation effort will involve the rehabilitation of turbines, generators and key plant systems, alongside the integration of improved engineering solutions to optimise performance. These upgrades are expected to extend the facility’s operational life by up to two decades, enabling it to continue supporting Kuwait’s growing energy and water demands driven by population growth and industrial expansion. A central focus of the initiative is improving fuel efficiency and reducing environmental impact. By enhancing the plant’s performance, the project will enable higher output with lower fuel consumption, contributing to reduced emissions and more sustainable resource utilisation.
