India’s First ESG Lab Launched to Foster Innovation and Future-Ready Skills

22 August 2025

India’s first ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Lab was launched in Mumbai to prepare students for a rapidly changing future shaped by artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and climate change. The initiative aims to promote innovation, scientific learning, and sustainability awareness among young minds, encouraging them to be future-ready in a technology-driven world.

The lab has been set up by STEM Learning in partnership with Brilio, both of which are driving STEM education across India.

Recognized by UNESCO, STEM Learning has been advancing science and sustainability education in government schools, while Brilio is expanding its STEM programs to over 20 states with mini science centers, astronomy labs, and innovation platforms.

Together, the organizations aim to reach one million children by 2030, nurturing the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

Talent capacity is one of the quieter constraints on India's ESG trajectory. As BRSR expands, TCFD-aligned climate reporting scales, and green investment flows grow, the demand for professionals who can bridge sustainability, technology and finance has outpaced supply. Interventions at the school and early-university level - such as this Mumbai ESG lab - address the pipeline problem at its source rather than its symptoms.

The STEM Learning–Brilio partnership is also a template for how CSR spend can generate measurable, sector-relevant outcomes. Reaching one million students by 2030 through mini science centres, astronomy labs and innovation platforms is ambitious but structurally credible, given the scale of both organisations' existing footprint in Indian schools.

For corporates designing next-generation CSR portfolios, the question is increasingly how education and skills-development initiatives feed the talent pipelines their own sustainability, climate and digital teams will need over the coming decade. Cognitud's CSR and ESG strategy teams help clients design programmes that are impactful in their own right and strategically aligned with long-term workforce and community-resilience needs.
