India to Host BRICS Environment Meetings on Climate and Sustainability

17 August 2026

India is hosting the BRICS Environment Working Group meetings in New Delhi on August 17–18, 2026, under its BRICS Chairship 2026. The meetings are being organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) at Bharat Mandapam and will bring together senior officials, policymakers and experts from BRICS member countries to strengthen cooperation on environmental and climate-related priorities.

The discussions are being held under India's broader BRICS 2026 theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The first day includes the Senior Officers’ Meeting of the BRICS Environment Working Group and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development. The second day will feature the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting, chaired by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.

Key areas of discussion include sustainable lifestyles, afforestation and forest-fire management, disaster resilience, circular economy, and climate-change adaptation. The meetings are intended to facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices among BRICS countries and build greater consensus on shared environmental challenges.

The event also gives India an opportunity to strengthen its role in international environmental cooperation while using its BRICS chairship to advance discussions around climate resilience, sustainable development and environmental protection. The government describes the meetings as a platform to strengthen collective action toward a more resilient and sustainable future.

India's BRICS environment agenda will start shaping how emerging-market disclosure architecture evolves, particularly around climate finance, adaptation and South-South cooperation frameworks. Our ESG-strategy and market-intelligence teams help clients position ESG narratives that work across BRSR, ISSB, CSRD and BRICS-adjacent expectations simultaneously.
