India Plans Push for Domestic Solar and Hydrogen Manufacturing

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is working on a strategy to boost domestic manufacturing of key components used in solar, wind, and green hydrogen sectors, aiming to reduce India’s reliance on imports.

The focus is on identifying and strengthening local production of critical items such as solar PV cells, inverters, polysilicon, electrolyser components, and catalysts used in hydrogen production systems. These materials are essential for scaling renewable energy infrastructure and supporting India’s clean energy transition.

The move is designed to build a stronger domestic supply chain within India, improving energy security and reducing exposure to global supply disruptions. It also supports cost efficiency in renewable projects over the long term by encouraging local manufacturing.

In addition to energy security, the initiative aligns with India’s broader sustainability and climate goals, particularly the expansion of renewable energy capacity and development of a green hydrogen ecosystem. It is also expected to encourage industrial growth and create new employment opportunities in the clean energy sector.

Overall, this policy direction signals a structured push toward self-reliance in clean energy technologies while accelerating India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Domestic manufacturing across solar PV cells, inverters, polysilicon, electrolyser components and hydrogen catalysts addresses one of the strategic vulnerabilities in India's clean-energy transition: dependence on Chinese-dominated supply chains for critical inputs. Building end-to-end domestic value chains reduces import exposure while creating industrial and employment benefit.
