India Launches Its First Hydrogen-Powered Train to Boost Green Mobility

India has launched its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant milestone in the country's transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation. Introduced by Indian Railways as part of the Government of India's broader green mobility agenda, the train uses hydrogen fuel cell technology to generate electricity onboard, emitting only water vapour during operation. This innovative approach is expected to reduce dependence on diesel-powered locomotives while lowering greenhouse gas emissions from the rail sector. The hydrogen-powered train has been designed to operate on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, offering passengers an environmentally friendly travel option without compromising on safety, comfort, or operational efficiency. Equipped with modern passenger amenities and advanced fuel cell systems, the train demonstrates India's growing capabilities in developing indigenous clean-energy technologies for public transport. The initiative also supports the country's ambition to become a global leader in green hydrogen under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Beyond introducing a new mode of clean transportation, the project highlights the government's commitment to decarbonising one of the world's largest railway networks. Indian Railways has been actively pursuing measures such as railway electrification, renewable energy integration, and energy-efficient infrastructure to achieve its long-term net-zero carbon emissions target. The successful deployment of a hydrogen-powered train represents another important step in reducing the environmental footprint of rail travel while encouraging innovation in alternative fuels. As countries worldwide explore hydrogen as a viable solution for low-carbon mobility, India's entry into hydrogen-powered rail transport strengthens its position in the global clean energy transition. The initiative is expected to generate valuable operational experience for future hydrogen-based railway projects and contribute to the wider adoption of sustainable transport technologies across the country. By investing in green hydrogen and next-generation rail infrastructure, India continues to accelerate its efforts towards achieving climate goals while providing cleaner and more resilient public transportation systems.
