The Government of India has highlighted a major opportunity in the renewable energy sector, estimating that the country has the potential to develop around 102 gigawatts (GWp) of floating solar power capacity. This assessment has been shared by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) as part of efforts to scale up clean energy deployment across the country. Floating solar technology involves installing solar photovoltaic panels on the surface of water bodies such as reservoirs, lakes, and dams. This approach offers multiple advantages, including efficient use of non-land resources, reduced pressure on agricultural and urban land, and improved panel performance due to the cooling effect of water. It also helps reduce water evaporation, which adds an environmental benefit in regions facing water stress. India is considered highly suitable for floating solar expansion because of its large network of reservoirs and water bodies. The identified potential reflects an important opportunity to diversify the country’s renewable energy mix while supporting rising electricity demand and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The government is also working on enabling policies and possible support schemes to encourage investment and faster development of floating solar projects. These initiatives align with India’s broader climate goals, including increasing renewable energy capacity and progressing toward long-term decarbonization targets.
