India Confirms No Decision on Ethanol Blending Beyond 20%

India has clarified that no decision has been made to increase ethanol blending in petrol beyond the current 20% (E20) target. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in Parliament, providing clarity on the future direction of the country's ethanol blending programme.

The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme is a key part of India's strategy to reduce crude oil imports, strengthen energy security, lower transport-related emissions, and promote the use of renewable biofuels. The government has made significant progress in expanding ethanol blending over the past few years.

The ministry stated that there are no plans at present to introduce blending levels higher than E20. Any future decision will be based on scientific research, technical feasibility, environmental considerations, and consultations with stakeholders, including the automobile and fuel industries.

For now, the government's priority is the nationwide implementation of the E20 programme by expanding ethanol production, improving fuel distribution infrastructure, and supporting the availability of compatible vehicles and fuel systems.

The clarification offers policy certainty for industry while reaffirming India's commitment to advancing cleaner transportation through biofuels. Although no higher blending target has been announced, ethanol will continue to play an important role in the country's long-term energy transition and sustainability efforts.
