India Approves ₹5,070 Crore Floating Solar Scheme to Accelerate Clean Energy Expansion

The Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY), a ₹5,070 crore initiative aimed at significantly expanding India's floating solar power capacity. The scheme seeks to develop 5 GW (5,000 MW) of floating solar photovoltaic projects across reservoirs and other suitable water bodies, supporting the country's transition toward a cleaner and more resilient energy system.

Floating solar technology enables renewable electricity generation without requiring additional land, making it particularly valuable in densely populated regions where land availability is limited. By installing solar panels on water bodies, the projects can also help reduce water evaporation while benefiting from the cooling effect of water, which can improve the efficiency and performance of solar panels.

The scheme includes provisions for integrated energy storage systems, helping improve grid reliability and enabling greater integration of renewable energy into India's power network. By combining clean power generation with storage, the initiative is expected to support a more stable and flexible electricity supply while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
