India has taken a leading role in driving the ASEAN-India partnership toward sustainable tourism, with both sides adopting a joint statement to strengthen eco-friendly practices and reduce pollution across the travel sector. The agreement reflects India’s growing influence in shaping regional sustainability priorities, aligning with its broader “Travel for LiFE” mission under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lifestyle for Environment initiative. The joint statement underscores India’s commitment to promoting responsible tourism models that minimise environmental impact. It calls for adopting the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” approach, phasing out single-use plastics, and encouraging destination management systems that preserve cultural and natural heritage sites—areas where India has been setting strong policy examples. India also emphasised the integration of ESG standards and renewable energy use within tourism infrastructure, particularly at popular destinations. The goal is to cut pollution, improve waste management, and ensure long-term ecosystem resilience, reinforcing India’s push for green transformation across all major industries. This initiative coincides with the 2025 ASEAN-India Year of Tourism, where India aims to showcase its sustainable tourism leadership and share its best practices in balancing growth with environmental responsibility—positioning itself as a model for sustainable development in the region.
