The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture, scientific innovation, and farmer-centric development as India works towards its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. Marking its 98th Foundation Day, ICAR highlighted its significant contributions to strengthening the country's agricultural sector through research, technology, and climate-resilient farming practices.
Over the years, ICAR has played a vital role in enhancing food security by developing high-yielding and climate-resilient crop varieties, improving livestock and fisheries productivity, and promoting resource-efficient farming techniques. These innovations have helped farmers increase productivity while reducing environmental impacts, supporting India's transition towards a more sustainable agricultural system.
The institution also emphasized the importance of adopting modern technologies such as digital agriculture, precision farming, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence to improve farm efficiency and resilience. ICAR continues to encourage the use of scientific research to address emerging challenges including climate change, water scarcity, soil degradation, and changing pest and disease patterns.
A key focus of ICAR's future strategy is strengthening collaboration between researchers, policymakers, industry, startups, and farming communities to accelerate the adoption of innovative agricultural solutions. The organisation is also promoting biofortified crop varieties, sustainable natural resource management, and improved agricultural practices that enhance nutrition, conserve biodiversity, and optimise the use of land and water resources.
ICAR reiterated that science-led innovation will remain central to building a resilient agricultural ecosystem capable of supporting India's growing population while safeguarding natural resources. By integrating sustainability into agricultural research and encouraging climate-smart farming practices, the institution aims to improve farmers' livelihoods, enhance rural prosperity, and contribute to national food and nutritional security.
The initiatives align with the Government of India's long-term objective of creating a developed nation by 2047, where sustainable agriculture, technological advancement, and environmental stewardship work together to drive inclusive economic growth and ensure a resilient future for the country's farming sector.
