European Union Adopts New GSP Framework with Stronger Sustainability Standards

The European Union has adopted a new Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) framework for the 2027–2036 period, introducing stricter sustainability, environmental and human rights requirements for countries seeking preferential access to the EU market. The updated framework aims to strengthen sustainable development while ensuring that trade preferences continue to support responsible economic growth and good governance.

Under the revised GSP, beneficiary countries will be required to demonstrate stronger compliance with international conventions covering environmental protection, climate action, labour rights, human rights and good governance. The updated rules expand the range of international agreements linked to trade preferences, reinforcing the EU's objective of integrating sustainability into its external trade policy.

The new framework also introduces enhanced monitoring and engagement mechanisms to improve the implementation of sustainability commitments. By linking preferential market access more closely to environmental and social performance, the European Union aims to encourage partner countries to strengthen domestic policies on climate, biodiversity, labour standards and responsible governance.

The revised GSP will apply from 2027 through 2036, providing a long-term framework for sustainable and inclusive trade.
