European Travel Commission backs €350k sustainable tourism initiative

18 December 2025 at 08:18 pm IST

The European Travel Commission (ETC) has unveiled a €350,000 co-branding and promotional campaign program designed to strengthen sustainable tourism across the continent. The initiative supports communication and marketing efforts that highlight responsible travel practices, emphasising environmental preservation, social inclusivity, and cultural respect. Aligned with broader EU sustainability goals, this co-investment scheme seeks to enhance Europe’s position as a premier travel destination while encouraging travellers to adopt low-impact behaviours. Prospective applicants — including tourism organisations and regional bodies — can apply until early February 2026, with campaign activities expected to run through late 2026, focusing on educating tourists about sustainable choices and promoting lesser-known destinations to help balance tourism flows. Programme organisers say that by strategically co-financing promotional efforts, the ETC aims to deepen collaboration across the tourism sector and elevate initiatives that contribute to environmental preservation, strengthen local economies, and preserve cultural heritage. Campaigns funded under this scheme will emphasise sustainability metrics and best practices that benefit both travellers and host communities. Officials noted that responsible tourism contributes not only to reduced carbon footprints but also to long-term resilience for destinations by encouraging visitor dispersal and supporting businesses that prioritise sustainability. The initiative forms part of a wider EU commitment to integrating sustainable tourism into economic and environmental policy frameworks.
