EU Approves €15 Million Aid Scheme for Irish Fishing and Aquaculture Sector

The European Commission has approved a €15 million Irish State aid scheme to support fishing and aquaculture companies affected by rising fuel prices linked to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. The measure was authorised under the EU's Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), which allows member states to provide targeted support to sectors facing exceptional cost pressures.

The scheme is designed to help businesses involved in the primary production of fishery and aquaculture products manage increased operating costs resulting from higher fuel prices. It will cover additional fuel expenses incurred between March and July 2026 and remain in force until 31 December 2026. Support will be provided through direct grants to eligible companies.

Under the programme, owners of fishing vessels shorter than six metres will receive a flat-rate payment of €350. Operators of larger vessels will be eligible for support based on documented fuel expenditure, with aid capped at €0.40 per litre of fuel. The structure is intended to provide targeted relief while reflecting differences in fuel consumption across the sector.

The European Commission concluded that the Irish scheme complies with EU State aid rules and the conditions established under METSAF. The framework was introduced to help businesses cope with sharp increases in energy and fuel costs arising from geopolitical instability and its impact on global energy markets.

The approval follows similar aid measures authorised for fishing and agricultural sectors in other EU member states. By supporting fishing and aquaculture operators during a period of elevated fuel costs, the scheme aims to maintain the economic viability of the sector and safeguard production across Ireland's seafood industry.
