Mexico could reduce its gross oil and gas imports by 34% by 2050 by combining transport electrification with broader changes in urban mobility, according to research from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy and the University of California, Davis.
The study examined Mexico alongside Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, and the United States, assessing four transport scenarios through 2050. Its combined scenario, which integrates electric vehicles with greater use of public transit, walking, and cycling, could reduce Mexico’s urban passenger transport energy consumption by approximately 70% and liquid fuel demand by up to 85%.
The findings position electrification as both an energy-security and decarbonization strategy. Reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels could help limit exposure to international oil price volatility and supply-chain disruptions while lowering transport-related emissions.
Mexico is already expanding the infrastructure needed to support this transition. Mexico City has deployed more than US$38 million to expand electric Metrobús operations, bringing its active electric fleet to 174 buses across Lines 3 and 4. The capital has also invested MX$1.6 billion in two electric trolleybus corridors, while Monterrey has added 66 electric buses to its TransMetro system.
Other regions are advancing similar initiatives, including Yucatán’s fully electric Ie-Tram network in Mérida and an electric transit corridor planned in Puerto Vallarta. Domestic manufacturing is also receiving attention through the Olinia electric micro-vehicle developed under Plan México.
For businesses, expanding electrified mobility creates opportunities across fleet transition, charging infrastructure, energy management, and supply chain planning. Cognitud can help organizations assess transport emissions, evaluate fleet electrification pathways, develop clean-energy strategies, and identify practical measures for reducing fuel dependence and supporting broader decarbonization objectives.
