Canada and ASEAN strengthened their strategic partnership during the recent ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, where both sides advanced shared priorities in trade, innovation, and sustainability. The dialogue, co-chaired by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Laos Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane, underscored Canada’s growing role as a key partner in Southeast Asia. A major highlight was the continued progress in negotiations toward the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA), which was hailed by ministers as a vital catalyst for regional economic growth. Once finalized, ACAFTA is expected to unlock new opportunities in next-generation sectors such as digital trade, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and green technology. Anand emphasized that ACAFTA, alongside Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, lays the groundwork for inclusive, rules-based economic integration and long-term regional resilience. Beyond trade, the conference reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to ASEAN’s sustainability and development goals. This includes support for climate action, disaster preparedness, and innovation-driven growth. Ministers praised Canada's Scholarship and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) program for its role in enhancing the region’s human capital and youth empowerment. The session also explored future cooperation in emerging technologies like quantum computing and energy transition. Both sides expressed interest in further aligning efforts under the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation and looked ahead to finalizing the ASEAN-Canada Plan of Action (2026–2030), which will chart the long-term course of collaboration. As the conference concluded, Canada and ASEAN reiterated their shared vision for a resilient, sustainable, and interconnected future, marking a deepening partnership at a time of evolving global challenges and opportunities.
