The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), in partnership with the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA), has launched an initiative to install 120 solar-powered water kiosks as part of its Green City Mission. So far, 25 kiosks are ready for operation, with ongoing civil and structural work at multiple other locations. These kiosks use solar energy and are equipped with advanced water purification systems and digital water meters to ensure efficient, real-time monitoring of water quality and consumption. The project aims to provide clean drinking water, especially in underserved areas, while significantly reducing operational costs by eliminating reliance on grid electricity. Officials highlighted that the initiative not only improves public access to safe drinking water but also aligns with broader goals of urban sustainability and smart water management. By integrating renewable energy into essential services, the project sets a model for other cities aiming to adopt low-carbon, cost-effective public infrastructure.
