Bahrain Reaffirms Commitment to Water Security at Saudi Water Week

Bahrain has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening water security and sustainable water resource management during the inaugural Saudi Water Week held in Jeddah. Bahrain's Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidan, participated in ministerial meetings, underscoring the Kingdom's support for regional cooperation to address growing water challenges.

Speaking at the second stakeholder consultation meeting for the 11th World Water Forum, the minister highlighted Bahrain's commitment to advancing Arab and international initiatives that promote water security. Discussions focused on developing innovative solutions to tackle challenges arising from climate change, population growth and increasing water demand.

Humaidan also emphasised the importance of expanding regional collaboration, investing in artificial intelligence and advanced technologies, and promoting knowledge exchange to improve the sustainability and efficiency of water resource management across the region.

During the ministerial session of the 7th Arab Water Forum, Bahrain showcased its progress in water sector governance, highlighting the role of the National Water Strategy and the Water Resources Council in promoting treated wastewater reuse, protecting groundwater reserves and strengthening the long-term sustainability of the country's water sector.

Bahrain's participation in regional water forums reflects the shared reality of Gulf water security challenges. Rising demand, climate-linked stress on limited natural resources, and dependence on desalination for the majority of freshwater supply create the systemic pressures that no single Gulf economy can fully address unilaterally.

National Water Strategy elements - treated wastewater reuse, groundwater protection, sector governance - reflect best-practice water-management dimensions. Successful implementation typically requires sustained institutional continuity beyond individual programme cycles, plus technology investment and behavioural change support.
