Bahrain Launches Tender for Major Solar Power Project

Bahrain has launched an international tender for a major solar power plant as the kingdom accelerates efforts to expand renewable energy generation and strengthen long-term sustainability. The initiative forms part of Bahrain’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and diversify its energy mix. The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) announced that the Bilaj Al Jazayer Solar Project will have a planned generation capacity of up to 100MW. The project is expected to become one of Bahrain’s largest renewable energy developments and is targeted to begin commercial operations in 2027. According to Bahraini authorities, the solar facility will contribute to the country’s renewable energy transition goals and support its target of sourcing 20% of electricity from renewable sources by 2035. Officials said expanding domestic clean energy capacity is important for strengthening energy security and reducing environmental impacts. The project also aligns with Bahrain’s broader net-zero ambitions and sustainability agenda. Authorities said increasing investment in renewable infrastructure will play a key role in supporting long-term economic resilience and lower-carbon development across the kingdom.
