Even though the world promised to provide decent work and growth, progress on SDG 8 is still not good enough, and the reasons are very personal for millions of individuals.
Over 57% of the world's workforce remains in informal jobs. That means no contracts, no social protections, and often, no voice. Job security is a long way off for many individuals. And it’s not just adults who are struggling. Young people are especially lagging behind. They are three times more likely to be unemployed than adults today. It's even worse for young women: almost one in five of them are not working, going to school, or getting training at all.
Part of the problem is that the world of work is changing faster than our education system. Employers are looking for skilled workers, but schools and training programs aren’t keeping up. Over half of all employers say they can’t find people with the right skills. As economies shift toward digital and green jobs, new opportunities are opening up but not for everyone. The digital gender gap frequently excludes women from these emerging sectors, thereby exacerbating inequality. On top of all this, many countries, especially developing ones, don't have the money to build infrastructure, social safety nets, or jobs that will help everyone grow. This continues to limit decent work and economic growth progress at the global level.
