Despite global efforts, achieving SDG 2 zero hunger remains a formidable challenge due to a number of complex factors affecting food systems. Climate change continues to disrupt agricultural productivity through extreme weather events, droughts, and shifting growing seasons, disproportionately affecting smallholder farmers in developing countries.
Armed conflicts and political instability further exacerbate food insecurity by displacing populations and disrupting food supply chains. Additionally, rising input costs, limited access to markets, and inadequate agricultural infrastructure hinder productivity and resilience in rural areas where hunger is most prevalent.
Another critical challenge is malnutrition in all its forms: undernourishment, micronutrient deficiencies, and obesity, which often coexist within the same populations. Food systems today often prioritize quantity over quality, resulting in calorie-rich but nutrient-poor diets.
Structural inequalities, such as gender disparities, lack of land tenure, and marginalization of indigenous communities also limit access to resources, education, and financial services necessary for sustainable agriculture.
Without targeted, inclusive, and climate-resilient interventions, the ambition to eliminate hunger and build sustainable food systems will remain out of reach.

Governments, international organizations, donors, the private sector, civil society, and consumers all share responsibility for achieving SDG 2.
Governments must enable policies and invest in agriculture and nutrition; donors and global institutions must fund, support, and coordinate; businesses must adopt sustainable, inclusive practices; civil society must advocate and engage communities; and consumers must drive change through sustainable choices and accountability.
Collective and sustained action from all angles is necessary to achieve zero hunger.
