Sustainable Agriculture: Practices and Impact on the Environment 

According to the World Wildlife Fund, Agriculture, being the largest industry in the world, accounts for more than $1.3 trillion worth of food production every year and is a job provider to over one billion individuals.

However, it is this agriculture sector that contributes significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

In fact, according to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, agriculture is responsible for 8.5% of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. An additional 14.5% of GHG emissions refer to the constant changing of land use for farming.

The World Resources Institute states that worldwide agricultural emissions rose by 8% from the year 1990 to 2010. Further, it is expected to increase by 15% by 2030, eventually accounting for about 7 billion tonnes of agricultural emissions every year.

Due to the constant expansion of population and changes in dietary systems, there has been a huge increase in food demand; however, this surge has put a burden on the agriculture industry. With an estimated 2 billion more mouths to feed by 2050, the global agriculture industry needs to take a different but responsible approach to farming.
