What is Cradle-to-Cradle? 

Cradle-to-cradle design, also known as C2C design, aims at designing products in a way that creates continuous cycles of use, thereby eliminating waste and promoting sustainability. It emphasizes doing the right thing from the start by using resources effectively and in a cyclical manner.

The cradle-to-cradle model ensures that products are reused, recycled, or biodegraded, unlike the traditional cradle-to-grave model, where products are disposed of after their end-of-life. This eco-friendly model mimics nature's process, where waste from one organism fuels another, resulting in a regenerative cycle.

The concept of cradle-to-cradle came into being by Professor Michael Braungart and William McDonough in the year 2001, and since then, this innovative model has been used as a catalyst in products, buildings, and production systems.

Key Pillars of Cradle-to-Cradle 

To put this concept into practice, Braungart and McDonough established a Cradle-to-Cradle certification framework on the basis of five key pillars, where each pillar denotes a critical aspect of a sustainable product ecosystem. These pillars are:  Material health: All the materials used in a product must be safe for human consumption as well as the environment. This means avoiding the use of all kinds of toxic chemicals during production and ascertaining that every single ingredient is thoroughly checked for its safety and impact.   Material reutilization: Materials must be made for continuous use and in a manner that allows the product to return to nature safely through biodegradable processes or be reintroduced to the industry through the recycle and upcycle method without compromising its function and quality.   Renewable energy use: Designing or producing materials should be done using renewable energy sources. This, while lowering dependence on fossil fuels, also encourages a business strategy of reducing carbon emissions.    Water stewardship: Water used during the production of these materials should come from sustainable sources and must be consumed responsibly, which involves cleaning and returning the used water to the ecosystem in a better and healthier condition.   Social fairness: Businesses must take social responsibility and positively impact communities while simultaneously ensuring that their business practices respect human rights. This involves encouraging fair labor practices along with diversity, equity, and inclusion.
