Since CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) was founded, the number of companies that report their environmental data to CDP has consistently increased. Over time, more companies have joined the initiative, disclosing their carbon emissions, climate strategies, and sustainability efforts.
Apart from asking businesses for disclosures, it also requests governments and public sector organizations—including municipal, state, and regional administrations as well as public authorities—for disclosures. Nearly 25,000 companies—worth two-thirds of the world market capitalization—as well as more than 1,100 cities, states, and regions joined CDP, according to the data released in 2023.
Investors use CDP data to assess risks and make informed decisions, while companies can also leverage CDP’s platform to request environmental impact information from their suppliers.
This helps businesses understand and manage their supply chain’s sustainability performance, ensuring greater transparency and accountability in environmental impact reporting.
Through CDP, more than 700 financial institutions with over USD 67 trillion in assets and more than 600 significant buyers with over USD 6.4 trillion in procurement expenditure seek information.

While there are multiple benefits to CDP’s unique and customizable reporting criteria, there are notable shortfalls. The CDP questionnaire offers a view into what is said in surveys, not what businesses really do to decarbonize their operations and therefore solve the climate challenge. For instance, CDP repeatedly rated Amazon an F. for what reason? Basically, despite its move toward electric delivery vehicles and other environmental initiatives, Amazon has been slow to release its carbon statistics as a business. Companies run the risk of being under more scrutiny of their sustainability aims and activities by excluding important replies in CDP's questionnaire. Even if a business cannot show an action- or progress-oriented response, rather than leave a response blank, it is better to state that the work has not been done or hasn’t progressed. Secondly, While CDP is a leading environmental disclosure system, it primarily focuses on climate change, water security, forests, and plastics. This narrow environmental scope means that companies looking for a more comprehensive ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) assessment may need additional frameworks like DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Index) and EcoVadis to provide a well-rounded sustainability evaluation.
