MANUFACTURING & INDUSTRIALS

Manufacturing & Industrials

Cognitud provides sustainability and procurement advisory to discrete and process manufacturers, industrial groups and their supplier networks. Our work covers greenhouse gas accounting and decarbonization planning, energy strategy, supplier ESG risk management, direct- and indirect-material category strategy, and the reporting infrastructure required by customers, lenders, and regulators.

Manufacturing engagements are delivered by an integrated team combining sustainability and procurement expertise, because the sector's largest emissions and cost drivers — energy contracts, material specifications, supplier selection — sit at the intersection of the two. Analysis is conducted at plant and product level, using operational data from ERP, energy metering and production systems rather than corporate estimates.

Client Profile

Discrete and process manufacturers; auto-component and engineering exporters; industrial conglomerates; mid-market suppliers subject to OEM sustainability scorecards and customer ESG audits.

Typical Entry Points

GHG baseline and Scope 3 screening; energy cost and decarbonization review; supplier ESG risk assessment; category strategy refresh; CBAM or customer-disclosure readiness assessment.

FOCUS AREAS

Manufacturing work is organized into three focus areas.

Each combines analytical scope, methods used, and the service lines delivered under it.

01

Operational decarbonization

Scope

Energy systems, process emissions and abatement planning

Covers Scope 1 and 2 emissions from process heat, captive power, purchased electricity and on-site fuel use, together with the abatement options available at each site: efficiency measures, heat recovery, electrification, fuel switching, captive and open-access renewables.

Analysis follows GHG Protocol corporate and project accounting standards. Abatement options are ranked on marginal abatement cost (₹ or $ per tCO₂e) and sequenced against maintenance shutdowns, equipment replacement cycles, and available capex.

Service Lines

  • GHG inventory development

Scope 1, 2, and 3 accounting at plant and product level; data architecture linking metering, ERP and production records; verification readiness.

  • Energy audit and efficiency assessment

Load analysis, heat-recovery and process-efficiency identification, aligned to ISO 50001 energy-management requirements where clients operate or plan certification.

  • Marginal abatement cost curve (MACC) development

Site-level abatement levers priced and ranked; capex, opex, and payback per lever; sensitivity to energy and carbon price assumptions.

  • Renewable energy and fuel-transition planning

Captive solar/wind, open-access and group-captive structures, biomass and fuel-switching options evaluated on landed cost and emissions factors.

  • Water, waste, and circularity programmes

Water balance and reduction planning; scrap and by-product recovery; waste-stream characterization and valorization assessment.

VALUE CHAIN COVERAGE

Coverage across the manufacturing value chain

Scope of advisory coverage by value-chain stage. Most engagements address two or more stages; the GHG inventory and spend baseline are common prerequisites.

Raw materials & sourcing

Embedded-carbon assessment of purchased materials; supplier emissions data collection; low-carbon material evaluation.

Category strategy; should-cost modelling; supplier qualification and ESG risk screening; contract negotiation support.

Inbound logistics

Transport emissions accounting (Scope 3 category 4); mode and routing analysis.

Freight category management; carrier selection criteria; rate benchmarking.

Production

Scope 1 and 2 inventory; energy audits; MACC development; water and waste programmes.

Energy and utilities procurement; MRO category management; capex equipment sourcing.

Product & distribution

LCA and PCF development; packaging assessment; customer disclosure support.

Packaging category strategy; distribution and warehousing procurement.

End of life

Scrap and by-product recovery assessment; take-back and recycling-route analysis.

Scrap sales and reverse-logistics contracting; recycler qualification.
