INDUSTRIES/CONSUMER GOODS & RETAIL

Consumer Goods & Retail

Cognitud advises consumer brands, retailers, private-label owners, and contract manufacturers on supply chain sustainability and procurement. In this sector the majority of emissions, water use, and social risk sits in purchased goods and services — ingredients, materials, packaging, and outsourced manufacturing — which makes Scope 3 management, supplier programmes, and category strategy the operative disciplines.

Engagements are staffed jointly across the sustainability and procurement practices, working from a common dataset: the spend cube, the supplier register, and the product specification set. Work is organized in the four areas below.

Service Lines

  • Scope 3 inventory (categories 1, 2, 4, 5, 12 as applicable)

  • Supplier segmentation by spend and emissions

  • Primary-data collection programmes

  • Emissions requirements in contracts and supplier agreements

  • Category strategy with emissions criteria in award matrices

Scope 3 category 1 (purchased goods and services) typically dominates a consumer company's inventory. Initial measurement uses spend-based emission factors applied to the spend cube; accuracy is then improved selectively by replacing spend-based estimates with supplier-specific primary data in the categories that contribute the largest share of emissions, following GHG Protocol Scope 3 guidance on data-quality hierarchy.

Cognitud's supplier-engagement work is targeted by segmentation: suppliers ranked by emissions contribution and spend, with data-collection and reduction programmes concentrated where the inventory is actually determined. Reduction expectations are incorporated into contracts and supplier agreements during sourcing events rather than requested separately, which requires the category calendar and the Scope 3 programme to operate on a shared plan — the principal reason both practices staff these engagements.

Typical Deliverables

Scope 3 inventory with documented methodology and data-quality assessment; supplier segmentation and engagement plan; contract-clause library for emissions requirements; and category-strategy updates with emissions weighting in evaluation matrices.
