Mexico Turns Sargassum Into a Circular Economy Opportunity for Coastal Communities

Mexico is stepping up efforts to address persistent sargassum accumulation by turning the coastal challenge into a potential circular-economy opportunity. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) is promoting projects that can transform sargassum into bioinputs and water-treatment systems while strengthening coordination between government agencies, communities and coastal industries.

During a visit to facilities in Yucatán, SEMARNAT officials highlighted infrastructure capable of processing up to 20,000 tonnes of sargassum and other organic materials. The government is also exploring greater involvement from the fishing sector in harvesting strategies and considering financing mechanisms that could support businesses developing sargassum-processing solutions.

The urgency is clear across Mexico’s Caribbean coast, where 83,137 tonnes of sargassum have been collected so far this year. Playa del Carmen accounted for 30,021 tonnes, while Cancún recorded 20,469 tonnes. The accumulation can affect seawater quality, produce odors during decomposition and add pressure to tourism destinations already experiencing weaker-than-expected hotel occupancy.

Mexico’s response is therefore moving beyond beach cleaning toward resource recovery, new value chains and ecosystem restoration. SEMARNAT is also advancing integrated beach management along the Progreso-Telchac northern coast, reinforcing the connection between waste management and coastal ecosystem health.
