Mexico City is expanding environmental action across reforestation, conservation, air quality, waste management, and water efficiency, with authorities outlining progress and new investments across each area. The government reported that 10 million plants, trees, and shrubs have been planted in conservation areas, while a new urban reforestation initiative will add one million trees along streets, avenues, and medians.

Conservation efforts are also receiving more than MX$1 billion (US$55.5 million) in direct support through the Altépetl Wellbeing program. The initiative supports producers caring for conservation land while promoting sustainable agricultural and livestock activities. Authorities reported that more than 50,000 hectares have been restored and over 300 hectares of previously invaded conservation land recovered.

Air quality monitoring is being expanded through low-cost sensors focused on PM2.5, enabling authorities and community leaders to identify pollution hotspots at the neighborhood level. The initiative supports the city’s stated objective of reducing polluting emissions by 35% and can help identify areas requiring stronger monitoring or further intervention.

Mexico City is also pursuing a circular economy approach through its Zero Waste policy, which aims to transform or recover 50% of waste by 2030. A recycling campaign has increased recovery by 45%, while the planned Circular Economy Park at Bordo Poniente will support waste recovery and conversion into new products or inputs.

Water management remains another major investment area, with MX$19 billion allocated this year and more than MX$7 billion supporting 643 water, drainage, and sanitation projects. Leak repairs are recovering more than 12 million litres of drinking water daily, while private-sector initiatives have saved more than 3 billion litres through pressure management.
