Kuwait has introduced an environmental reporting system designed to standardise how government bodies measure and report their environmental performance. The system, approved in 2026, uses 14 indicators covering resource consumption, waste, recycling, green spaces and environmental awareness.

Government entities are expected to begin preparing annual sustainability reports in early 2027, with submissions scheduled for 2028. The framework is intended to create a national environmental database, assess the impact of government programmes and identify areas where environmental performance can be improved.

The reporting system also connects environmental performance with governance, risk management and decision-making. By establishing common indicators across government bodies, Kuwait aims to make environmental performance more measurable and support more consistent tracking of resource use and environmental impacts.

The initiative forms part of Kuwait’s broader environmental strategy and Kuwait Vision 2035. The country is targeting carbon neutrality by 2060 and plans to increase renewable energy’s contribution to around 50% by 2050. Its wider programmes include renewable energy development, waste management, ecosystem protection, treated wastewater use and marine-litter reduction.
