The European Commission has proposed fishing opportunities for 2027 covering 10 fish stocks in the Baltic Sea, as several species continue to face sustainability concerns. The proposal sets catch limits and management measures based on scientific advice and the EU’s long-term fisheries management framework.

The proposed quotas take different approaches depending on the condition of individual stocks. Fishing opportunities would increase for Bothnian herring, central Baltic herring, Gulf of Riga herring and sprat, while by-catch limits for western and eastern Baltic cod and western Baltic herring would be reduced.

Baltic cod remains a major concern, with both eastern and western stocks continuing to struggle despite conservation measures introduced in 2019. The Commission is therefore maintaining existing conservation measures while adjusting by-catch limits to reflect the latest stock assessments and reported catches.

Western Baltic herring also remains below sustainable levels, leading to further restrictions on fishing activity. The measures reflect the continued pressure on marine ecosystems and the need to allow vulnerable fish populations to recover.

The proposal also highlights the wider environmental challenges facing the Baltic Sea, including climate change, eutrophication, biodiversity loss and contaminants.
