The Government of Canada has launched a nationwide engagement process to gather input for its third Voluntary National Review (VNR) of progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The review will assess Canada’s implementation of the 2030 Agenda and is expected to be presented at the UN High-Level Political Forum in July 2027.

The engagement, running until December 18, 2026, invites governments, Indigenous partners, civil society, youth, academia and the private sector to share perspectives, successful initiatives and challenges related to advancing the SDGs. The process is intended to bring a broad range of voices into Canada’s assessment of its sustainability progress.

The consultation will help identify areas of progress as well as challenges that could affect Canada’s ability to advance the 2030 Agenda. It also provides an opportunity to highlight partnerships and practical approaches that can contribute to stronger and more inclusive sustainable development.

The initiative comes as Canada continues to assess its progress across the 17 SDGs and strengthen collaboration between different sectors. Bringing businesses and other stakeholders into the process reflects the importance of coordinated action in addressing environmental, social and economic priorities.

For businesses, the engagement highlights the growing importance of connecting corporate sustainability strategies with broader national and global sustainability goals. Organisations may need to strengthen how they measure, manage and communicate their sustainability impacts as expectations around transparency and accountability continue to evolve.
