Abu Dhabi Steps Up Environmental Monitoring to Safeguard National Waters

Abu Dhabi is strengthening environmental monitoring and conservation efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems, freshwater resources and biodiversity. The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), which marks its 30th anniversary this year, is building on decades of environmental data and conservation programmes to address growing pressures on natural resources.

Marine conservation has delivered significant progress, with the Sustainable Fisheries Index rising from 8% in 2018 to 100% by the end of 2025 following tighter fishing controls and improved monitoring.

Turtle numbers have also increased by about 30%, while Abu Dhabi has restored nearly 75 million mangroves and cultivated around 1.8 million coral fragments. Groundwater protection remains another priority, with around 118,000 wells recorded across Abu Dhabi and hundreds of monitoring wells tracking extraction and water quality.

EAD is also developing AI applications to shift environmental management towards predictive monitoring across air quality, marine water quality, groundwater and pollution.
