Achieving First-Time EcoVadis Recognition Through Structured ESG Evidence

Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare

For pharmaceutical manufacturers, sustainability performance increasingly influences supplier qualification alongside quality and regulatory compliance.

Preparing for its first EcoVadis assessment, a manufacturer of pharmaceutical products and active pharmaceutical ingredients chose to strengthen how existing ESG practices were documented, governed, and evidenced. Cognitud supported the organization in translating mature sustainability initiatives into an assessment-ready framework capable of demonstrating performance across the four EcoVadis evaluation pillars.

The Challenge

Environmental, labour, ethics, and responsible sourcing initiatives had been implemented across the business over several years, yet the supporting documentation remained dispersed across departments and management systems. Policies, procedures, and performance records were not consistently linked to the EcoVadis methodology, creating the risk that the organization's first assessment would underrepresent the maturity of its sustainability programme.

The business needed a structured approach that connected governance, evidence, and documentation into a submission aligned with assessor expectations.

The Solution

Existing policies, management systems, and sustainability initiatives were systematically mapped against the EcoVadis framework to identify documentation gaps across Environment, Labour & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. Evidence was consolidated, governance documentation strengthened, and supporting records organized to improve traceability between business practices and assessment criteria.

The submission was then structured around EcoVadis evaluation requirements, enabling sustainability performance to be communicated through a consistent, evidence-based narrative rather than isolated documents.

The Outcome

The organization earned an EcoVadis Silver Medal in its very first assessment, establishing a strong external benchmark for ESG performance and demonstrating the effectiveness of a structured, evidence-led approach.

The programme also created a scalable documentation and governance foundation that will support future assessment cycles while strengthening sustainability credentials with global customers, procurement teams, and business partners.

The next chapter of success starts with one conversation.
